When i look at your description of your environment above,it sounds like you only have a few clients to protect, so getting Essentials just for the agentless backup capabilities isn't necessary. Since, as others have pointed out, VMware restricts the APIs for agentless backups for ESXi unless you have VMware Essentials, you will need to use an agent to protect these clients.
